Flax preparation

In order to meet and expand the store of linen in peoples´ homes, linen were grown in earlier times, generally at each farm. The flax was sown in May on Erik-day. To grow and to take advantage of the flax was a knowledge that many women had in the past. Today is the knowledge of the flax process is almost gone. One of the few that know how to do this is Nanja Florin. She has learned to cultivate and then spin and weave. Linen has a luster and is transformed as well today as before for sheets, tablecloths and towels, and were kept as treasures in chests on the farms.

Katherine Tingley

Katherine Tingley, known as Madame Tingley was a prominent theosophist with a worldwide field of activities. She came among others to work on Visingsö, after an audience with King Oscar II, who had promised to lease Crown land there. The business was not as great as was first thought, but a theosophical summer school was established, however, and many other activities. Summer school for young people, contained a lot of theater and music. They sewed up the theater clothes for the children, taking advantage of the knowledge of women on the island. In 1913 Katherine organized the International Theosophical Peace Congress in Visingsö, with over two thousand participants from all over the world. Among other things, there was built a Greek temple at the port where the foremost artists in Sweden participated. Madame Tingley also started schools in India, Cuba and California, and made lecture tours throughout the world and even wrote books on theosophy.
